Iliamna Seals are only one of two freshwater harbor seals in the world, along with the lake Baikal Seals. They are a distinct population segment, living in a singular ecological niche. The mining project near lake Iliamna in Alaska will put these vulnerable creatures in peril, destroying a unique habitat and a precious animal. My artwork is reaching out to try to raise awareness about this issue and mobilize the people to protect our vulnerable parts of the world.
This mining project near a lake with such biodiversity reminds me of the Rosia Montana project from my home country, Romania, where the peaceful protests of the Romanians against the Canadian mining company closed the doors to the ecological damage that was to come.
