The marine iguana (Amblyrhynchus cristatus) is the only sea-going lizard in the world, found only on the islands of the Galapagos Archipelago. It is adapted to feed on seaweed and sea grass and clear away the salt from its body through a special gland near the nose. That is why its head and body is covered with white encrusted patches of salt - another extraordinary adaptation to the salinity of the ocean.
When the water gets too cold, marine iguanas come on the shore and warm up on the rocks, just like in this painting. I chose to paint the most colorful of them, the iguana found on the EspaƱola island, nicknamed the "Christmas iguana" because of its festive colors.
This artwork is part of a 30-day challenge that I started, in which I paint endangered species that require our protection and attention. Art is a powerful tool in raising awareness through a visual dialogue that sparks interest, engagement and excitement to tale action.
