Description
The Secretary bird is a really cool looking creature that looks like a cross between an eagle and a crane, with a sharp beak but long elegant legs. It is actually closely related to the hawks and vultures, as a bird of prey. Its interesting name probably comes from the fact that it resembled a male secretary from the 1800's, who wore knee-length pants and carried their goose-quill pens behind their ears. Others believe its name comes from the Arabic "saqr-et-tair", which meant bird hunter.
The Secretary bird is a ferocious hunter, known for its ability to fight and prey upon snakes and small mammals. It stomps the prey with really quick punches with one foot. Pretty insane, ha? It lives in Africa, south of the Sahara Desert. Its population is now in decline and it is listed as vulnerable, due to habitat loss because of human developments and climate change.
This artwork is aiming to create a visual dialogue and inspire us to spread the awareness and act now to protect our precious nature.
